Geo Oceans was engaged to perform Lloyd’s Register class-accredited inspections of the Water Ballast Tanks (WBT) on an FPSO offshore Australia. The inspections formed part of a class renewal program and focused on internal tank condition assessment using ROV-based methodology.

FPSO ROV Water Ballast Tank Inspections
Scope

Our scope of work included:
- FMECA-type ROV scope methodology adapted for confined tank access
- Remote data transfer in real time via Starlink satellite communications
- General Visual Inspections (GVI) across 10 individual tanks
- Ultrasonic Thickness (UT) measurements and Close Visual Inspection (CVI) at selected critical locations
Technology & Execution
To deliver this project, Geo Oceans mobilised a fleet of next-generation GO ROVs, purpose-built for confined-space and enclosed-tank inspection. The ROVs were supported by integrated Starlink satellite systems and bespoke networking
equipment, allowing real-time video and data streaming to onshore engineers. This capability enabled near-instant assessment and feedback during operations, reducing downtime and enhancing engineering response times.

Geo Oceans continues to set the benchmark in class-compliant inspection services with:
- An unparalleled global track record in planning and executing class surveys
- Proven experience delivering confined-space ROV inspections for FPSOs
- Purpose-built technology for marine classification and hull integrity programs
- A commitment to safe, efficient, and unmanned alternatives to traditional inspection methods
Outcome
The inspection campaign was completed successfully, with high-quality data captured and reviewed in real time by onshore inspection engineers.
This enabled timely reporting, effective decision-making, and compliance with Lloyd’s Register class requirements—all without the need for manned tank entry.

Key outcomes included:
- Safe and unmanned inspection of 10 ballast tanks using confined-space ROV systems
- Real-time data streaming for remote QA/QC and engineering oversight
- Full compliance with class society (Lloyd’s Register) inspection criteria
- Identification of areas requiring further monitoring or maintenance
- Reduced HSE risk by eliminating the need for confined space entry
- Streamlined reporting process through live Digital Edge data integration
